Northwest Local School District is thrilled to announce that the State of Ohio has identified Northwest Local School District (NWLSD) as a leader in science education, showing remarkable progress from 2020-2024 for Grades 5 and 8. Robin E. Deems, Science Consultant and State Coordinator for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST), reached out to Superintendent Yater to learn more about the district’s successful approach to science instruction.

In an email, Ms. Deems commended NWLSD for its commitment to fostering innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking among students, stating, "Not only do we see the gains you have made in your assessment data, but much more importantly, your efforts are preparing and empowering your students to be first-class innovators, problem solvers, and discerning thinkers in your community."

Key Strategies Driving NWLSD’s Success:

  • Dedicated Science Instruction: Structured daily science instruction in grades 4-8, with integrated learning in K-3.

  • Innovative Curriculum & Resources: Use of Savaas Interactive Science, Generation Genius, Brain Pop, CK-12, Gizmos, and Science Weekly to engage students in hands-on learning.

  • Emphasis on Conceptual Understanding: A shift toward inquiry-based learning and real-world scientific investigations.

  • Professional Collaboration & Data-Driven Instruction: Teacher-based teams analyze student performance, share best practices, and refine instructional strategies.

  • Commitment to Student Growth: Common assessments, performance tracking, and goal-setting to support student success.

NWLSD continues to strengthen its science program and is grateful for the state’s recognition. The district is also appreciative of the teachers and administrators for their hard work and investment in our students.

Ms. Deems asked us to emphasize to our teaching staff “how excited and proud we are of them... We see them and are very grateful they are on our Ohio team."
